I’m hoping to get an answer here as I have been searching with no luck! We will be in Sicily in late June and we’re planning to get the train from Siracusa to Cefalu (about 4/5 hours I believe) with a change at Imrese Termini. My question is - are the trains running on this stretchon have they been replaced by busses? I really struggle with motion sickness on busses. We are travelling on a Saturday if that makes a difference. Many thanks!
The trains are run by Trenitalia. If you look at their website for 20 and 27 June you will see the all train journeys (1 change at Messina) or 2 change (at Catania Airport and Termini Imerese). In most cases you can also book those trains now.
Thank you, I was more asking if busses ever replace trains on these routes. Maybe it’s impossible to predict though!
The only time buses would replace trains is in case of work along the line or in case of unforeseeable circumstances which could cause interruptions, like a landslide or something similar. In any case they would be rare circumstances, although interruptions for line maintenance do happen. The rail line via Messina (Siracusa-Messina then Messina to Palermo, with Cefalu as intermediate stop) although a bit longer, would be my preference as it is overall faster, involves one less change and is more scenic in my opinion. Check the Trenitalia website for a date in early June as late June may not be available yet.
