I am spending 4 nights in Rome and planning 7 in Tuscany/Umbria. Is it better to stay in two hotels to explore the Region or one centrally located, i.e. Cortona? It seems that if I travel the south/central, I will be OK. If I want to go more toward the Chiani Region, it looks like I might need to stay in two hotels. Thanks!
Ann - It would be hard to use Cortona as a base and day trip to Siena or Florence. You do not say if you will have a car or not - Tuscany is great to explore in a car.
The Chianti region is fantastic. Use Greve or Panzano as a base (directly between Florence and Siena w/ great bus service). Loads of great restaurants, wineries & views. Have fun.
Thanks, Ron,
I am renting a car in Rome. I love Chianti and would like to visit the whole region from Fiesole down through Moltipulciano. However, I am also eyeing Umbria (Orvieto, Spoleto, Montefalco, Perugia). It almost appears to be two different trips if I only want to spend a week...doesn't it?

Not sure about driving in Rome. If possible, I would take the train to Orvieto (1 hr) and rent the car there. It might be hard for you to navigate through Rome by yourself. We had a GPS to get us around Tuscany, etc. You could probably rent one along with the car. It's a bit tricky driving on those smaller red roads. By the way, Orvieto is absolutely charming and definitely worth one night. Have fun!
Thanks, Denise!
