As I checked tour prices I saw single supplement. The amount varied for this per trip. What is that?
If you're traveling alone, and don't want a roommate. This is not uncommon for tour companies, to charge more for people who don't share a room.
If you don’t want to pay a single supplement and are traveling alone, you will have a different roommate (same sex) at each hotel change. If there’s only one other solo traveler, they would be your roommate the entire time. But, if there happens to be no other solo travelers of your sex, or they all paid the single supplement for their own room, you would have your own room.
I have taken a RS tour as a solo traveler (didn’t pay for a single supplement) several years ago for the 1-week Paris trip. Since there was only one hotel, I had the same roommate the entire time. We were fine rooming together - no issues. But, another set of women had some issues, and they ended up paying to have an extra room and get separated.
I’m signed up for the Best of the Adriatic tour, and I paid for a single supplement this time. I don’t snore, but if I had a roommate who did snore, I wouldn’t get any sleep. I’m older now and really appreciate the time to relax & recharge at the end of the day to start the next day ready to go!
It's about the hotel costs. A single room in most places is not half the cost of a double room. The supplement varies because (1) some tours are longer than others; (2) some countries and cities have overall higher hotel costs.
I always get the single supplement. I know that I need my own space at the end of the day.
I normally pay the single supplement on tours as I like to have some "quiet time" on my own at the end of the day to get organized for the following day. I also wouldn't want to end up with a roommate that snores like a gorilla, nor would I want to bother others with my habits.
I've found that the cost of both tours and single supplements varies by country and by hotel. Tours these days seem to use somewhat more "comfortable" hotels than they did in the past (no more shared bathrooms), so the cost is higher.
Thank you to all who replied.
