Single Mom Seeks Affordable Hotel Ideas *Near Pantheon*

I'm a single mother taking my two kids - 13 & 9 - to Rome in May/June and I am having a bit of a pickle finding affordable rates anywhere near the center. Last time we stayed near the Vatican in a wonderful convent but this time I'd like to focus on being walking distance to Pantheon, Santa Maria Sopra Minerva, etc. Any advice or names of hotels would be SO APPRECIATED. I can't afford the 4 and 5 star ones, I should mention...

Affordable means different things to different people. You need to give us an amount. Also, the city center is the most expensive area of Rome. If you are looking for less expensive areas try the spanish steps, colosseum or termini area. All are still close to the sites but it's easier to find less expensive hotels in these areas. Donna

Great idea to look closer to the Spanish Steps! As far as a price per night, I'm thinking max would be $125. Thanks, Donna

So,, thats what 75 euros or so? Yikes, for a triple room in central Rome,, thats going to take alot of sleuthing. Have you gone on the Rome forums on tripadvisor.com,, I would. Good luck.

I think I'd better revise that number up to $150 a night as I'm looking...

You need to start thinking in terms of euros and not dollars. 150 dollars is only 114 euros. You might find a triple in the termini area for that amount. Check venere.com for hotels in the areas mentioned earlier. You may need to up your budget though. Donna

Hi Andrea, After reading your post, I checked the Airbnb website and there are apt./studios in your price point in central Roma, even one near Piazza Navona You will have to check your dates/ availablity/prices but I think a studio would probably work for you, you'll save some money on meals too. Good luck with your search. Sherry

Thanks for that information!
I will go look now. As the day wears on and I've been doing more research, I'm thinking of just going back to the VERY affordable convent route. Since I'll be traveling with kids I won't mind that they shut their doors at 11! Thanks all for your ideas...

Hi Andrea I've been to Rome several times the first time I visited I stayed at two places. (I wanted to see the difference between two areas.) The first place I stayed at was on the outskirts of town just past St. Peters. It was a FABULOUS B&B that has family rooms called B&B Roman Holidays. The rates were REALLY good and the breakfast was wonderful. The hotel is actually an Apartment in a residential building that you share with the owners who are very accomodating and nice. I'd recommend this B & B to anyone on a tight budget. The other place I stayed at was a splurge, the Trevi Boutique Hotel and it was a LOT more money. It was a fabulous place to stay also. You can't beat the location and the staff there was very helpful. I recommend both highly but for your budget pehaps you might want to check this B&B out. Good Luck and Happy Travels!

Hi, check Hotel de Petris. Stayed there July 2011 with my daughter and really enjoyed the location. Maybe 10 minutes from Pantheon, just 5 min from Trevi. There were a few others close, Fenilli? I had strongly considered Hotel Regno but it was not available for all my dates. FYI: Go directly to the hotel web sites as they have special offers. Also you may want to ask for a standard triple to get the rate to fit in your budget. It never hurts to ask management for a certain rate via e-mail.

It really is all about location, location, location. It's worth it to pay a little extra to be close to the stuff you want to see. Every now and then, I test this theory (e.g. stayed on the Lido last year for our third trip to Venice instead of Venice proper to save some bucks) and I've always regretted it.

Andrea, I think I'd stick with your first inclination: "focus on being walking distance to the Pantheon, Santa Maria Sopra Minerva, etc." Like Michael says, you don't want a vacation of regret, especially if it's tied to your location... Not sure how many days you'll be in town, but you might consider an apartment. The cost could be substantially less than a hotel. The convents are a good option, but often the B&B's can compete in cost (with more comfort and amenities). For the best-rated accommodation options, you can look at these articles: Spanish Steps, Pantheon, Piazza Navona, and Trevi Fountain areas. Each article also has a link (at the bottom of each article) that rates the properties in the area by cost. That could provide you some "new" choices. But I'd certainly read the reviews and comments if you decide to book by price. The good news is that the reviews and rankings by booking.com and venere.com guests... require that they must have booked and stayed there. So you do get actual visitor experiences. Again, you've been to Rome, you know where you want to stay... I'd keep looking as who knows when you might get back.
