I will be picking up a rental car close to the train station in Florence and my hotel is in the Chianti region. Does anyone have a good map app suggestion or can tell me the simplest way to travel on the highways or back roads?
Is there an app that shows how many toll booths are on a route and how much the toll is?
We used WAZE last June when we traveled from Florence through the Chianti region and to Siena. It provided the best updates on traffic, ZTL zones, and speed cameras, but I can't remember if it told us the toll charges. Your rental car might come with a GPS and that will also provide the basic navigation (we played a game in the car to see which one was more accurate--WAZE or the GPS system) and the navigation was good, just not the traffic updates.
Because of the closure of the Ponte Amerigo Vespucci, getting out of Borgo Ognissante without ZTL problems is much more complicated. You would be well-advised to get your car at Via Palagio degli Spini, the complex near the airport, reached by taxi. Read this, be sure to get the IDP:
To get a preliminary idea of route options and tolls, you could use Google Maps or Via Michelin. I find Via Michelin better with estimates of tolls and other driving expenses.
Viamichelin also has a handy smartphone app.
Travel on the historic SR 222, the. Chiantigianna, passing through the villages and towns of Chianti.
