I recently purchased tickets for the Colosseum through the Coopculture site--for September 30 10:50 am, "ordinary access". Does this mean I can enter the Colosseum without a guide, if I'm using the RST audio guide? Or do I have to hire a guide -- or am I just on my own?

If this is the ticket you purchased....
...then it's perfectly fine to enter without tour guide and to enjoy your visit using the audioguide. :O)

Categories where you require your own guide clearly state this fact:
Colosseo + Arena, Foro Romano, Palatino (with your own guide)
If you book a ticket under this category they will not be honored unless you have a guide with you. If you booked from this separate category:
Colosseum, Roman Forum, Palatine ordinary admission
you are fine and don't need an accompanying guide.

Thank you for your speedy and very helpful replies. The coopculture site, which is the official Colosseum purveyor, is trickier to navigate than at first glance. There are numerous ticket/tour types, so the above answers were very clarifying!
