Does anyone know if you can buy Internet and phone sim cards in the Palermo airport? Looking for a 3G card for my iPad and a card for my android phone. Or is it better to purchase these things before I arrive in Sicily?
Daveen, I haven't tried to buy SIM cards at Palermo airport, but it's doubtful whether you'll be able to find prepaid cards for data service there. Using SIM cards and data plans from cellular networks here is not a really good idea, as data roaming charges can be HUGE (especially for phones). It would help to know which cellular network you're currently using with your iPad and Android phone? Good luck!
I thought I could unlock my tmobile phone and use an Italian service to get a local phone number, using a sim card. I planned on doing the same thing with my iPad, which is 3G compatible. Since I would be using a local service through a sim card, I assumed roaming would not apply?
Daveen, I can't answer your question about getting a SIM card in Palermo, but I can tell you that if you do get an Italian SIM card, there will be no roaming charges. I was able to jailbreak and unlock my Iphone 3gs (ATT) and switch out my SIM card with one I bought at the TIM store at Rome's Termini Station (upstairs). This was in October 2011. For me, it was the deal of the century. I paid 12 or 15 euro, can't remember exactly, and received: 1. SIM card 2. 1 week of free local calls 3. 1 month of unlimited internet access
4. 5 euro worth of credit for any international calls/texts The one thing you should be aware of is that I don't think they have microSIMs....only the regular size SIMs. Also, your Tmobile phone will need to be GSM compatible. Hope this helps somewhat!
