SIM cards for Apple devices

We are going to be in Italy for 8 days starting 23 December and plan on using Skpe for international calls (wi-fi from our hotel room.) Would like to get economical micro sims for unlocked iPhones and iPads, I also have an iPad mini (are new nano-SIM cards available in Italy.) We will be in Florence, Venice, and Rome and have read all the posts back to August regarding cellular. sounds like TIM will probably be best choice. Is their coverage the best in these cities. Thoughts, Guidance, Help is greatly appreciated. Probably making another trip to Sweden in August 2013 if that makes any difference

I just returned from Italy last week. If you are only using Skype (or Facetime) over wi-fi I don't think you will need to do anything to your phone as the wifi signal is just like using it at home or your local coffee shop. We went to our local Verizon store in the states before leaving and had the international sim unlocked on our Iphone 4s to receive calls and texts.

For more information on Italian mobile data plans, I'd head over to PrepaidGSM.net. Their Italy page has all the service providers, with details of their plans and links directly to their websites (may need to use Google Translate for these). And their Italy forum is the place to ask questions (just be prepared; the answers can get very technical, so don't be afraid to ask follow up questions).
