I plan to fly to Malpensa Airport in Milan and then purchase a SIM card from the mobile dealer there. I want a SIM card for TIM, with prepaid data and phone service minutes. I will be on a road trip in Italy for 2 weeks. Will I have any issues in doing this, and is TIM the best mobile company for coverage across Italy?
Anne, I'm not sure whether PAYG plans with data are readily available, or what the cost is? Be sure to post a report when you get back, as the information may be useful for others here. Happy travels!
You need your Codice Fiscale (Italian Tax Code) and ID. You can calculate the codice fiscale online. http://www.comuni.it/servizi/codfisc/ Cognome: last name Nome: first name exactly as it appears in ID (passport), if it includes a middle name in passport, write that too. Comune: City of birth. If abroad write country of birth in Italian (Stati Uniti, if u were born in the US) Prov: Province, if abroad write EE (which stands for estero, or abroad) Sesso: Sex (F=femmina=female)
Data di Nascita: date of birth (dd/mm/yyyy) Click on calcola. Print card, take with you. They will require a local domicile. Your hotel address will work. TIM is good.
In addition to the Codice Fiscale, they will need to make a copy of your passport, so have it handy. For more information about TIM plans, here's an English language summary: http://www.prepaidgsm.net/en/italia/tim.php. The Italy Forum on that site is a good place to get more specific info (don't be afraid to ask for clarification, as it can get very technical): http://www.prepaidgsm.net/forum/italy/
