I understand your frustration. Recently I saw "La Dolce Vita" and Rome has certainly changed from when that movie was made. Not to say that you're as old as that movie. But if you remember anything about your first trip, it might be like ridding a bicycle. I always just take those Hop On Hop Off tours and use RS's book. The HO.HO I used was the 110 Open Bus Route Rome. We got it at the Termini Station. But you can board it at any other stop. The 110 also has an Archeological Bus that takes you outside the city walls and to the Catacombs. http://www.trambusopen.com/en/110open.cfm And many other tours in Rome. I hope this helped, I don't know how much touring or how much you're willing to spend? I personally like to do my own thing and wing it. I don't like a rigid schedule, so those tours that create an experience for me, are not for me. I love getting lost, frustrated and then being surprised. But thats me!!! Trying to communicate with locals is a blast. And if you're polite, the world can open up for you.

I guess it really depends on what you want to see. I would suggest a tour of the Vatican museums because they are so large and there is so much to see. You can book that directly through the vatican. It will allow you to bypass the lines and take the bypass into the basilica after the tour.
http://biglietteriamusei.vatican.va/musei/tickets/do?weblang=en&do I would also suggest a tour of the Forum. I like to do this tour with an audio guide so I can stop when I wish and spend extra time exploring what I've just learned about. My favorite is by pocketvox. There are lots of tours of the city offered by many different companies. I, personally, don't like guided tours as I like to explore and spend time at the sites. I prefer audio guides and have found some really great ones on the net. Some are free and some cost a small fee but they all give really good information and allow you to go at your own pace. Donna

If you have the money in your budget, you might consider looking at a tour company - www.througheternity.com. Compare them against other tours for price, group size etc. At the end of the day, you can always tour with audio guides and/or RS book in hand.

Hello. We are going to Rme on Aug. 29. for a week. We have signed up for a couple of Gray Line tours. We have been very happy with Gray Liine in numerous countries. You can go to Gray Line.com, as they are based here in the U.S.

I was in Rome last fall, and we loved the tours we took through Rome Walks: http://www.romewalks.com/ You can check out their reviews on Tripadvisor.com. We took the Twilight Rome walk, which was really lovely and covers quite a bit, as well as the Colosseum tour, and the Vatican tour. Even if the Colosseum and the Vatican don't float your boat, definitely try the Twilight tour, as it covers many sights like the Piazza Navonna, the Pantheon, Trevi fountain, etc. Reasonably priced and friendly guides! :)
