Sightseeing in ROME

We only have 2 days to explore Rome. What are the best sites to see each day for getting a feel for this amazing city?

These kinds of vague questions are always hard to answer not knowing what your likes and dislikes are but:

One day could be spent seeing the colosseum, palatine hill, forums, circus maximus, trajans markets and the capitoni hill and museums.

The other day could be spent seeing the trevi fountain, spanish steps, piazza navona, pantheon, Santa Maria Sopra Minerva church and the castel sant angelo.

Another option is to spend one day at the vatican seeing the museums, basilica and piazza.

Great question - I will be there on Friday & will see the Vatican! If you will be in Rome on a Friday -now until October- the Vatican offers tours of the museums at night: http://mv.vatican.va/3_EN/pages/MV_Home.html

Anyone have an opinion on the catacombs? Is it worth the time or does it just look like a cave with shelves that held missing remains?

EDITED

Agree with Donna. See the ancient ruins (Palatine Hill, Forum, Trajans, and Colosseum; also Victor Emmanuelle Monument and Capitoline Museum) and then do the Rick Steves night stroll from the Spanish Steps to Trastevere (or in reverse). I do the stroll in the daytime however. You will get to see quite a lot doing the stroll.

You can also get a good overview of the city by riding the hop on/hop off tour bus (#110).

Our first visit to Rome was 1 1/2 days. We managed to "see" everything by walking from the Spanish Steps to the Coloseum. We basically took the Rick Steves night stroll - with some extra turns here and there.

We spent the next morning seeing both St. Peters and the Vatican Museums (without tours).

Rushed? yep. But we have been back now several times and have explored areas of interest more throughly. We love the churches.

This year we will have three days! We're looking forward to some catacombs and St Peter in Chains.

Safe travels!

Make sure you take the time to visit the Catacombs! It will make you wonder what type of Christianity is practiced today given the very different images you'll see in the catacombs!

With only 2 days to explore, the catacombs might be a little out of the way and not a good use of that time. Better to save those for your next trip!
