Sights between Rome and Naples

Hi, I am traveling with my family of 4 - this time flying to Rome but the final destination will be the Amalfi Coast and surrounding area (Positano, Ravello, Sorrento, etc). Are there any worthy stops between Rome and Naples for food or sightseeing on the way to Naples? We've already been to Rome a couple of times before and also toured Florence, Pisa, Cinque Terre etc. This time we would like to experience more of southern Italy. Thanks for your recommendations!

Not so much that I would avoid doing the fast train between. There is just so much in the Naples/AC area that I see no need to tarry.

The royal palace at Caserta is mildly interesting, but skipping the fast train for a 2 1/2 hour multi-stop regionale train isn't worth it, and if you really wanted to see Caserta, it is easily accessible from Naples.

Southern Italy is wonderful, and you will definitely be kept busy in your planned itinerary, visiting the AC and Sorrento. Don't short change Naples, itself. It is incredibly vibrant and exciting. It reminded me of New Orleans and the chaos was intoxicating.
