We are flying into Pisa and want to spend 1 night in either Lucca or Siena before heading to Cinque Terre. Only have time for one - which would you pick?
Jan,
My choice would be Lucca, as it's not only much closer to Pisa but the transportation links to the Cinque Terre will also be much quicker.
Cheers!
Lucca would be much easier and Siena would be out of your way. We spent 2 nights in Lucca last week and it wasn't enough---love that city! we also visited Siena and it was lovely---but too far off you path to be reasonable.
Jan: Given that you're arriving that day and only have the one night, if you look at a map and look first at the location of Pisa, then run your eye southeast to Siena, and then back up (northwest) past your starting point in Pisa, and on to Cinque Terre, you'll see why the above 2 posts give the advice they do.
We liked Siena over Lucca in general, but given your itinerary, Lucca is definitely the better choice.
