I have a day set aside to visit Sienna and San Gimigano in May, 2009. I've read many reviews about guided tours on this helpline and a common theme seems to be the lack of time spent in each location and feeling rushed through. Also, apparently a great deal of confusion about the meeting location for the tour bus (some people even missed the tour altogether because of this). So I'm wondering if it might be advantageous for me to strike out on my own via public transportation as opposed to a guided tour?
Lisa, Grayline has a tour of Siena and SanG. The pickup place is visible from the main train station. You are bit rushed at SanG (1hr.) but Siena was about 4hrs. It includes a tour in Siena. If you need more info, message back.
You can do this on your own. SITA has an express bus from Florence to Siena. SITA also has bus service from Florence to SanG and Volterra. But, not between them.
There is a bus system between Siena and SanG. You go through Poggibonsi. CLICK HERE for the bus schedule. All very doable.
Great! For me personally, I would prefer exploring a place on my own and being on my own schedule. And the money saved will buy more souvenirs, another bottle of wine or another fine Italian meal.
I took public bus to both Siena and San Gimi. it was so simple, low cost just know the bus schedules so you do not miss last bus. These are walkable villages and guided tour not really needed.
