I am trying to develop a March 2026 itine. rary for Florence, Assisi and Siena. We have been to Rome a number of times but I assume that is my arrival airport, not Milan. We have also visited Venice, Verona, Po Valley, Cinque Terre, Puglia, Sicily, Lucca and Tuscany. I'm thinking one town would be a day trip and the other we might spend a night or two. I am planning on a shorter trip than normal, perhaps 8 days, Anyone can easily convince me to stay longer or add something I am not aware of. Which site do you think would benefit from a longer stay? I do understand that Assisi is a longer train ride. Last I knew you must transfer in Florence for both, Siena and Assisi. I had hope for a direct train from Rome , but both require transfers. All thoughts and suggestions welcomed
Hi Ellen, there’s a direct train from Roma Termini to Assisi at 8:02am & a few other times. It’s a 2-hr regional train. Some places near Assisi that I also enjoyed staying for a few days - Perugia & Spello.
I stayed at those locations in June. I’m not sure how they would be in March. Spello has very steep lanes which I wouldn’t feel comfortable walking if it was very rainy weather.
We spent 2 nights in both Assisi and Siena (note spelling) and felt that was about right
We enjoyed both very much
With 8 nights I would give at least 3 to Florence, 4 if you add a day trip
Direct trains from Rome to Assisi
There is a bus from Rome to Siena that is a bit quicker than trains thru Florence
We spent two wonderful weeks in Spello and highly recommend it. We stayed at the top of the village so didn’t have to deal with the steep walks.
With 8 days and a desire to see Assisi and Siena I'd give FLorence 4 nights and the other two two nights each which gives you a full day which is sufficient (although both are wonderful places and would benefit from longer stays. You could also easily spend 5 nights in Florence and do Siena as a day trip by bus. We have done it both ways, spending a couple of nights and day tripping from Florence.
