Sienna from Florence by bus--one day trip there/back

My husband and I want to travel to Sienna for the day, departing from Florence. We plan to go on a weekday during the third week in April. We have been told, we should take the bus since the bus station is in town. My questions:

1) Which bus line/route and when should we get the tickets? How many days in advance should we purchase? Or get the tickets just get when we are ready to go? We are staying at a hotel close to Florence's rail station.

2) What do you suggest for an itinerary--the must see's? Should we get any tickets for Sienna historical sites ahead of time?? We plan to explore Sienna on our own (no local city tour guide). We will need time to sit and relax occasionally and might draw/paint (we will bring our travel size art-kits/journals and just need places to sit undisturbed). Don't know the rules about doing sketching in the galleries or churches in Italy. Some are too crowded to consider this anyway. So, we hope to find a seat outside if weather is good.

3) When should we plan to arrive and depart? We want to eat lunch there, maybe an afternoon dessert/coffee before heading back to our Florence hotel.

4) Would it make sense to rent bikes for the day?

Many Thanks!!

  1. You can get them the day before or whenever online
    http://www.sitabus.it/en/florence-siena-bus/

  2. You should research Siena for yourself to determine your own must see's with your time and money there is plenty of information out there on the internet or in a guide book at the local library and on youtube. This a good video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQuIp8tt9Us

  3. Leave as early as possible before the crowds arrive. The ideal time to leave is when you feel you've had enough but sometimes you either leave to early or later than you want depending on the bus schedule back.

  4. No bikes. Siena can be a human traffic jam. it is a walking city.

My wife and I took a bus from Florence to Siena a few years ago. Try this link for bus & train info https://www.rome2rio.com/. Bus ride takes 1 hour and 30 minutes. Cost is USD $10 - $18 per person 1 way. Very dependable service. The Internet is a great source to answer your other questions and itinerary and when to buy tickets. The planning for a trip is almost as fun is the trip itself.

I did this trip a few years ago. I followed the RS guidebook in terms of walking the town and visiting sights. Being one of the first tourists to arrive by bus in the morning meant fairly empty streets, which I loved. By about 10 am things started picking up. I don't remember how much time I spent here, but I believe I left around 5 or 6 pm.

For lunch, YOU MUST go to Antica Osteria Da Divo. I'm going back to Italy this year and contemplating a day trip here again just to dine at this restaurant. It's listed in RS guidebook.

I forgot to add, I purchased my bus ticket the morning of. This must have been around 7:30 am or so. I did not pre-purchase tickets for any sights there and I don't think it was necessary. Don't forget to stock up on panforte, which is a specialty torte sold there.

Study this website for all the Siena Cathedral has to offer, https://operaduomo.siena.it/en/visit/

Our first trip to Italy we did a day trip to Siena and combined it with other towns on a tour. We didn’t get nearly enough time to enjoy Siena. So last May we stayed a week in Siena. Love this place. It really is a pleasure to stroll the city in late afternoon /early evening as many are out for the same.
We did a special tour of the top of the cathedral, being able to look below at the gorgeous marble depictions in the floor. We went into the space above the ceiling. We had spectacular views of Siena going outside the Duomo at the very top. Huge fan of this. Only other suggestion is to time visit so you see the cathedral leisurely prior to that tour. Do not miss the Picolomini Library in the cathedral. My favorite.

We stayed in Siena and it was best early in the morning and later in the evening when all the tour buses pulled out, so personally, I would plan on spending an entire day there. The cathedral is magnificent and don't forget to see the library. The campo is a great spot to sit in the sun and just be. You tube some of the Palio to get an idea of the transformation of the campo during these 2 annual races. Walk up to the top of the tower for a break taking view. Don't forget the panforte, a speciality in the area.

Thank you everyone! These are all good suggestions. I’ll review RS guide book and check on those links Jazz + Travels.

Great coffee and even better panforte
We stopped in here several times
Easy to get to as you stroll past shops

Google it for photos of shop and reference to cathedral.
Agree you should go early to Siena. Because we scheduled many trips we saw Siena early morning and late afternoon and night. Felt very safe at all times.
