We plan a day trip to Sienna during our stay there next week and want to catch some other less traveled towns along the way. Is this doable on a train or will we need to take a bus? Also, will it be easy to figure out at the station or can we buy our tickets before hand? Anybody else done this and have some suggestions on towns? I am a photojournalist so i enjoy getting pictures of real people an locations.
Siena is a beautiful city with major art and history to engage you for a full day. It would be a challenge to see Siena plus another town by train or bus in the same day.
Are you staying in Firenze? Siena is about an hour from Firenze by bus, Arezzo is also about an hour from either Siena or Firenze.
You could go to Siena and Fiesole (local bus goes there from Firenze) in a full day.
Check out Pisa and Lucca. Pisa really has one nice thing, the Leaning Tower and the Field of Miracles )?) Lucca is in that direction, not sure about transportation, yet. Gimignagno is great, the city of many towers. I don't know how you will be able to do more than Siena in one day if you are a photojournalist, there is so much everywhere to see. Good luck, Enjoy!
We took a wonderful day tour from Walkabout Florence called Best of Tuscany. Left from Florence- morning guided tour in Sienna, lunch at a beautiful vineyard, then San Gianiano (misspelled- very popular walled village) and a stop in Pisa (we purchased the tickets to go up the Tower from the tour rather than taking chances getting a timed ticket when we got there).
The 3 of us (grandpa, me and teenage son) really enjoyed the day - guide was fantastic and it made visiting these 3 places very easy. We also learned more than we would have travelling alone - which is our usual preference. Well worth the cost
You can take the train or bus from Firenze to Pisa, have a couple of hours at the Tower complex (see the cemetery, bombed during WWII and restored), then go by train or bus to Lucca to spend the rest of the day. Bike or walk the walls, have lunch there rather than in Pisa, and enjoy the thousands of photo ops. Perhaps stay in Lucca for dinner. You can get a beautiful bistecca alla Fiorentina (for two) at L'Oste di Lucca.
