Siena with a car

How far out are the parking areas in Siena and what is the average cost to park? Is there reasonable transportation to the parking areas or do you have to cab? I have read enough on this forum and the RS book to know that having a car in Siena is not a good idea, but we want to use Siena as a base (4 nights) and then do day trips out in the Tuscan, Chianti, San Gimignano, etc. areas for 3 of the days. All books/reviews say that Siena is charming and we want to enjoy that in the evenings. Will be traveling with our young adult son, so we want to be in town so he will have something to do at night. Thanks

There's lots all over the place. The closest is a hundred feet from the Piazza del Campo. They all charge the semi-standard European twenty or twenty-five euro per day.

If you stay at a hotel outside the city walls that has parking, the parking cost might be zero. Pay parking is available at many locations, both covered and uncovered. Many are walking distance to the city center. The historical center is largely pedestrians only, therefore if you choose a hotel inside the perimeter of the ancient city walls, you might be forced to leave the car away outside the ZTL. I think the best strategy is choose the hotel carefully. I know that staying in the historical core is nice and quaint, but with a car I'd choose accommodations that can be reached with a car and preferably that have parking. You can still go the historical center in the evening likely by walking. Siena is not a big town.

I had no trouble navigating to the Stadio parking lot that's mentioned in Rick's arrival directions, walkable to San Domenico and a few listed hotels. Confirm the nearest recommended parking lot(s) with your hotel, either on their web site or when booking the reservation by email.
