Siena vs Florence

I am trying to decide whether to spend more time in Siena or Florence during a trip. I was planning to stay in Siena for three
days and Florence for two days but it seems like there's a lot more to see in Florence.l Any suggestions?

I'd flip them. There is more to see in Florence for sure.

If you want a day-trip from Siena to Montepulciano, then keep it as planned. If not, 2 days in Siena is sufficient.

I agree about giving yourself more time in Florence, unless you really don't like cities and want the immersion experience in a small village.

When will you be in Siena? If it's around the time of the Palio, disregard what I just said -- the village will be packed!

Thanks for all your answers. I'll be in Siena the first week of October.

I would definitely spent the extra day in Florence. I love Siena, but there is more to do in Florence.

Something you should know about Siena -- it's Not flat like Florence. Florence is easy walking, and Hop On-Hop Off buses go up into the hills, which I think is a Must-Do for the beauty and history!

Siena on the other hand is Hilly, roller coaster hilly, up and down, up and down, all the way thru the town, until you reach the arena where the Palio is held, that's huge and flat, edged with yummy places to eat. But for the most part, you don't walk Siena, you climb Siena.

Now my hometown Amaseno is hilly, but It's built on a huge foothill, and the walk ascends, up, up, up, Not up and down. So there's a difference in hills. Why do I bring this difference up?

I don't know, except to say that Siena is quite an experience, and where I can stay for months at a time in my hometown, I've so far lasted only one day at a time in Siena and then high-tail it back to Florence.

But I've Not given up on Siena, I have made changes, this year I've hit the Gym really hard, went back on vitamins, and I think by the end of the year I'll be ready to tackle Siena again!

It all depends what you want to do and see. I have stayed in Siena, wandered the back streets and hung out with locals, restaurants, bars, etc. Loved it. Florence, to me, is more museums, art, etc. I like it, but prefer a more laid back experience, once I have done the typical tourist experience. I did have the best Ribollita in Florence, however :)

I might note that we spent time wandering off the main tourist grid in Florence and had a great time so it CAN be done.
