A group of 4 couples is renting a farmhouse in Tuscany and some have not been to Venice. We have the house for two weeks. Should we consider a trip to Venice and possibly stay one night? Can we drive or would the train be the best way to go?
You need to stay at least overnight. If you can't do that then it is a bit too far for a fruitful day trip. Train or drive works. It seems that it is not possible to get to Venice on the train before 10:30 anymore. But the advantage of the train is no driving and no parking either. When you exit the train station you are immersed in Venice and the Grand Canal.
Thanks. I agree that we should spend the night. Do you know the driving/train time to get there?
It is 3.75-4.25 hours from Siena. You can play around with departures and arrivals on the Trenitalia website. They only display schedules a couple of months in advance, but for planning purposes select a day of the week near term (i.e., Thursday April 7) that corresponds to your planned travel day during your trip. It will be close.
