I realize the trip from Siena to Sorrento will be a long one. I am concerned because I will be returning the rental car in Siena at 9am. My question is which is the fastest most economical way to Sorrento? Take the bus from Siena to Florence, and then train to Naples to catch the circumvesuviana? Or train from Siena to Rome, then take a direct bus to Sorrento? I have been trying to get on the trenitalia website to check prices, but I keep getting errors. Any input would be much appreciated. Thank you!

The fastest, most convenient and most economical way is probably to keep the rental car a few hours longer and drive to Sorrento to return the car there. This is especially true if there are 2 or more of you traveling together. You'll be in Sorrento in 5 hours and the driving is virtually all freeway, except for the last few km from Castellammare to Sorrento.
