Siena to Sorrento

Hi all, hubby and I will be driving from Siena to Sorrento this summer as part of our itinerary. We are planning on leaving Siena around 9am and don’t really plan on being in Sorrento until around 6pm. It’s about a 5 hour drive so we were thinking we would like to stop and see some sites. I was thinking Civita di Bagnoregio but have also heard a lot on these boards about Orvieto… which would be the better stop? Keep in mind we only want to stop for an hour or so. Also, is there another place we could stop between Rome and Sorrento? That also seems like a long stretch so we would like to make another short stop.

Another question. We will have to keep the car in Sorrento… I have heard parking can be a nightmare, any recommendations? Our B&B is right in the middle of downtown. We also plan to go to Pompaii , Herculaneum, and Vesuvius the next day. Since we have the car, should we drive to these sites or take trains/buses?

Thanks!
Jess

I'm sure you'll get many responses but I'll start off by saying: best to ask your B&B owner about parking in Sorrento; from Sorrento take the train to Pompeii, etc (it's easy), do not drive; from Rome to Sorrento you'll be on an interstate-type highway almost the whole way. There's not much to see but if you're a WWII history buff you do go right past Monte Cassino.

The drive will be easy - all autostrada. Until you get to the turn off to Sorrento. Watch the signs carefully as you are going to wind through the villages that converge where the penninsula begins. We drove through there twice - once was easy and once was a bit more challenging for some reason.

Do get driving instructions from your B&B. We stayed in Massa Lubrense so we had to drive all the way through Sorrento. It wasn't hard as long as you pay attention. And speak nicely to the policeman when he pulls you over because you are now not only going the wrong way on a one-way but you are also in a pedestrian only area. They were quite nice and lead us out to where we really wanted to be!

I think Sally's post says it all (wrong way in a one way pedestrian only). Take the train.

Thanks all for the suggestions! I will contact my B&B and see what they say about parking and will also leave the car the next day and take public transit to the Pompaii , Herculaneum, and Vesuvius.

Any other suggestions on where I should stop on the long drive? We have about 9 hours to till on a 5 hour drive... either Civita di Bagnoregio and Orvieto. Anywhere else. I like the WWII idea. You think that's enough. We want to get the most out of it.

Thanks again :)

Orvieto deserves more than an hour and Civita is a bit off the track - I would suggest Montepulciano for a quick 1-2 hour stop. and then something I wanted to do but missed the cut off was the Tivoli Gardens which is off the Auto route you will be traveling to Sorrento. Hope to get there this time around. Agree with some of the posters it is a good drive and once you leave the Auto route keep an eye on the signs.Make sure you get a Michelin Map it is a God send. Again ask your hotelier for parking suggestions.
