Siena to Rome to make a flight later in the day?

The advice for day-of-flights is pretty consistent on the forum - stay overnight the last night in the city of your airport flight. If they miss a connection, if there’s a train strike or reason it’s not running, they will be buying a very expensive new airline ticket.

www.rome2rio.com will show you transportation options, but don’t rely on the times it states. The website will point you to bus companies or trenitalia.com for trains.

At the very least, I would be staying overnight in Florence and taking an early Freccia train to Rome, just in case, to reduce the number of transportation legs and thus the chance for a bad outcome.

get to rome the day/night before flight, stay either in hotel at/near FCO or hotel near termini roma train station. remember check in is 3-4pm and check out 10-11am. they can have a dinner in rome or near FCO, catch train to airport. with no stressing
is this flight back to USA/Canada? can also pick up a sandwich or something to eat at airport or on flight, have plenty of time to check in, go thru passport/customs get to gate and relax.
several years ago we were doing a transatlantic cruise, had shuttle to civitavecchia, woke up and all streets/alleys blocked with cops/security, no cars/shuttles allowed. having a student protest at pizza navona with thousands of people. pulling our suitcases to find some main road, saw one empty cab/taxi. he takes us about an hour 15 minutes, but can't bring anyone back (guess not allowed) we didn't care, was 140E one way. we paid & was happy!! many people missed the ship and had to fly to barcelona next stop and not happy.
you can hope for a great no problem train ride and then again all heck breaks loose. not worth it. go enjoy and have fun
