Siena to Orvieto

Hi everyone! After checking the archives, still need to post a simple question and ask for your advice. 4 adults with ample luggage need to travel on a Friday morning from Siena to Orvieto. We will have already taken the bus from Florence to Siena, and understand that is the recommended mode of trans- comfortable and drops us off in central Siena. Do you also recommend the bus to go from Siena to Orvieto? Ease and comfort as well? Better idea than train? We could get our tickets, say, the day before we depart? Thank you!!!

You will need a car if you plan on other areas than Orvieto. Realize however that parking can be difficult if you stay within the walls. We had to find parking on street after 6pm (not easy) and then be gone by 8am or keep feeding the emeters. Not an easy routine.

Leslie, I'd probably travel by train on that route, although Bus may be an option. If travelling by train, have your Hotel arrange a Taxi or Shuttle to run you down the hill to the station. The rail trip will be ~two hours, usually with one change at Chiusi. When you arrive at Orvieto, take the Funicular up the hill to the town. Depending on which Hotel you're staying in, you should be able to walk to your Hotel. However, as you'll have "ample luggage", you may want to use a Taxi to get to your Hotel. Happy travels!

The train works well between Siena and Orvieto. When you arrive at Orvieto station, the funicular that takes you up the hill to the town is right across the street. Buy your combination funicular/bus ticket at the station. At the top of the funicular there is a bus stop. Either of the buses that stop here will take you to the main part of town near the cathedral. One bus goes around the edge of the town and stops at the cathedral; the other goes up the main street and makes multiple stops along the way. If you have lots of luggage, be sure to find your hotel on a map ahead of time.

If you aren't staying overnight in Orvieto, there used to be a hotel at the base that would keep your luggage; you'd have to check the guidebooks for that...I, too, would take the trains. Some don't require a change in trains, and cost from €9,60-14,10 (walk-up price) depending on the train.

Thank you to all!!! Car not part of the plan for now, either bus or train for this leg. Sounds like train is the way to go. I really appreciate some of the details you included in your responses- taxi idea, funicular, etc. We will be staying in central Siena, and near the cathedral in Orvieto for one night. I am hoping to arrive in Orvieto by noon-ish so we have time to explore the town. On to Rome- by train- the next morning!! Thank you!!!
