Hello all, my partner and I are in Italy starting June 16th. We will be in Florence and then are heading to Siena for two nights. After that we need to make our way to Naples. Any suggestions on transportation in and out of the region? Can we take a train directly to Naples from Siena, or would it make more sense to take a train or bus back to Florence and travel to Naples from there? We don't want to lose an entire day if we can help it. Thank you!
My boyfriend and I just did the reverse of this, traveling from Naples to Siena. We took a train from Naples to Chiusi, about 4 hours. From there you can either take a local train to Siena (1h30) though I believe there are also busses departing regularly between Siena and Chiusi. It’s waaaaaaay more convenient to take a bus out of Siena and super easy too — just to go the bus stop which is like a 10 min walk from the city center, and all the buses are right in one spot.
If I had known how easy and fast bus transport was in Tuscany I would have done a bit more exploring. The website is at-bus.it
There is a train station in Siena, but trains don’t go from there directly to Naples. You will need to transfer in Florence or perhaps Chiusi. You are looking at about a five hour journey but you could leave early in the morning and not lose the whole day. Check Trenitalia.com and see what your options are. And yes, buses are available as well, but it’s still going to take about five hours.
Hint for if you’re catching a bus in Siena - they leave from the Piazza Gramsci, which is pretty central. There is a kiosk that lets you go underground, where the ticket office is.
Would it make any sense to visit Siena first, and be in Florence when your next stop is Naples? Northern and Southern Italy are kind of far apart. Be aware it takes a minimum of two trains from Naples to the Rome airport, if Naples is your last stop. We flew out of Naples once, but that was to the U.K.
I would Take a bus from Siena to Rome's Tiburtina bus depot, walk to the Tiburtina railway station and check on the Departures monitors which company is departing first. Open the relevant app, buy a ticket and take a direct high speed train to Napoli Centrale.
There is no need to go north when you are headed south, but compare the journey times at various times of the day. The Route via Florence can sometimes be faster even if Florence is in the wrong direction.
Thank you all for the help, I will look into all of your suggestions. I will definitely look into the bus options, especially Chiusi. We are not flying out of Naples and have a few more stops after that before we spend some time in Rome and then fly home.
