How do we get from Siena to Lerici? no car.
Your best public transportation option would be train from Siena to La Spezia and buses between La Spezia and Lerici/Pontevenere. There are boats between Lerici and Pontevenere in high season, with the last ones running mid-afternoon. It isn't clear from your posts whether you're staying in Lerici or day tripping from Siena. If staying, the boat schedules would allow to go to Pontevenere in the morning and return to Lerici in the afternoon. If day tripping from Siena, you should plan to depart early and return late as the train takes about 3 hours each way and bus travel will add to the total travel time.
thank you .... we will be coming from siena (having checked out of the hotel) and on our way to CT. I was thinking about stopping in Lerici for a couple of hours and then over to Portovenere. and then head up to CT. a totally different question while in Siena, want to go to SG late afternoon/evening, have dinner. But don't know how late the busses run from SG back to Siena ??? thanks again
The last bus from San Gimi P.S. Giovanni to Siena V. Tozzi without a bus change departs at 18:40. There are later buses from San Gimi to the Poggibonsi train station but I don't see buses to Siena from the Poggibonsi train station to Siena. There are two later buses from Poggibonsi but you have to find your way to Roncalli stop to catch the later bus to Siena. Or, since you are at the train station, just take the later train to Siena. But, at the Siena train station, you would need to walk about a mile slightly uphill or take a taxi. The bus gets you to the major V. Tozzi bus stop. Here's a picture of what the schedule looks like. http://gyazo.com/bb94f30debe11230f5931442ed59642e
