Late Sept.. when we leave Siena, our next stop will be CT for 3 nights. I would like to see Lucca. Should we keep the rental car that we will have in Tuscany, stop in Lucca on the way and drop the car in LaSpezia OR leave car in Siena, take the train, stop in Lucca for a few hours, then continue on the train to CT?
The train station in Lucca is right on the edge of the old town. I don't see any advantage to driving there.
The car is great for getting to places in Tuscany that aren't easily accessible by public transportation. I'd dump it once it has fulfilled that purpose for you.
Google Maps shows it is only a 2 hr drive from Siena to Lucca. Wouldn't it save travel time to drive and drop the car in Lucca then continue by train to CT?
You are correct Laura. Car takes an hour 50. Train takes almost 3 hrs. It's a pleasant drive.
Keep the car until La Spezia where it it is easy and quick to take the train to the Cinque Terre.
We were just in Italy and drove from Sienna area to Lucca. I agree with dropping the car in LaSpezia. There are plenty of parking spaces along the outside of the wall in Lucca and it is reasonable (1 euro per hour). Don't try to drive inside the wall.
Keep the car and drop it in La Spezia.
Any other option doesn't make sense.
