Siena to Amalfi Coast: How/What Train to take and/or transportation--Please HELP us!

How would my husband and I get from Siena to the Amalfi Coast? I know that the train goes to Naples/Sorrento area which is why my husband and I were just debating on staying there. We know that Sorrento also has easy access to the boat/ferry to get over to Capri where we are debating on going for either just the day or staying the night so we can experience the Green Grotto.

Every picture and what we read about Amalfi is breathtaking so please help us find out how to prepare/book our travel to get there.

If it helps, we are going to Rome after.

We are wanting the place(Sorrento/Amalfi) that has the best environment, beaches, nightlife, etc. I have noticed the beaches look nicer in Amalfi and also noticed you can kayak and do activities which is great.

We want to book our transportation in advance if we can, or if you inform me its easy to do there, then please let me know.

You'd do best to take the bus up to Florence and catch the fast train to Rome Termini from there. You could also go by train from Siena, but you get on out on the edge of the city and it takes longer.
It's about 150 miles from Rome down to Naples, but the train's pretty fast.
You can save by booking the train trip on Trenitalia.com.

There is a Green Grotto on the Amalfi Coast, but the most famous one in Capri is the Blue Grotto.

Train from Roma Termini to Napoli Centrale takes about 1.25 hours, you could also take the train to Salerno rather than transfer at Napoli Centrale, then take a ferry from Salerno to Amalfi or Positano.

Danielle,

It would help to know where on the Amalfi Coast you want to go? The route will vary somewhat depending on the destination.

As the first reply mentioned, it might be faster to take the Corse Rapide (Expresss) Bus from Siena to Florence (about 1 hour), and then connect to the high speed trains.

If your destination is Sorrento, travel time from Firenze SM Novella to Napoli Centrale via Freccia train is about 2.5 hours, depending on which train you use. From there you'll walk downstairs to the Garibaldi station and buy tickets for the Circumvesuviana for the trip to Sorrento (about 70 minutes).

If your destination is the town of Amalfi, it will be a somewhat longer trip. One method you could use is to travel via high speed train from Firenze SM Novella to Salerno (about 3H:25M, depending on which train you use). From Salerno you'll have to take Bus or Taxi to Amalfi. Another option would be to travel from Salerno to Vietri sul Mare by local train and than Taxi or Bus from there to Amalfi.

You can book your tickets for the high speed trains in advance, but you MUST be willing to commit to a particular train, as those have compulsory reservations which are specific to train, date and departure time. If you miss your assigned train, your tickets may be worthless (depending on what class of ticket you buy). You can save money if tickets are purchased up to 120 days in advance. However if you'll be travelling in the near future, all the cheap tickets may be sold out and only Base fare available. In that case you can either buy your tickets in advance online, or buy locally when in Italy using either a Kiosk or at a staffed ticket office, as the price will be the same. For travel on Buses or Regionale trains, you MUST validate the tickets prior to boarding or risk hefty fines.

If you want to purchase tickets online, you might try www.capitainetrain.com as I've found it really easy to use. Note that on both the Florence - Naples and Florence - Salerno routes, you can also use the competing Italo Treno. Check the prices both there and at Trenitalia.com and take the best deal (you can buy tickets for both rail networks using Capitaine Train).

Once you've decided on a specific destination, it will be easier to offer more detailed suggestions. Sorrento is probably the easiest place to use for a home base. If you use the Circumvesuviana, be sure to wear Money Belts and watch your luggage closely, as that train has a bit of a reputation for pickpockets and scammers.

We took the Frescia train Ken speaks of from Florence SMN to Salerno station. Very fast, only 3 stops--Roma Tiburtina, Roma Termini, Napoli Centrale. When booking with Trenitalia, make sure you pick the train that does not require a change at Naples--I believe there are only 1 or 2 of those a day. The bus from Salerno to Amalfi can be boarded adjacent to the Salerno train station or at various stops along Corso Giuseppe Garibaldi. It cost 2,20 Euro and is barely 1 hour to the town of Amalfi. Easy ride for us in March, might take a tad longer in high season.

Train is great, both to and from Naples (any major city). Once in Naples you can take a ferry to any of the Amalfi coast towns and/or Sorrento. Train to Sorrento, then 100 euro cab ride to Positano or Amalfi.

Don't get to infatuated with beaches on the Amalfi coast, they are NOT sand beaches, only pebbles (and they hurt my feet). But it is beautiful.

Gordon means Ravello, and he is right. And you can get from Sorrento to Amalfi for a €7 bus ticket.
