Siena Solution?

I'm trying to plan an early October trip and am having trouble figuring out a good solution for including Siena in the plan. Here's what is under consideration:

Detroit (or Cleveland or Columbus, OH) via MXP to Bergamo – 4 nights

Bergamo to Verona – 2 nights

Verona to Trento – 4 nights

Trento to Bologna – 5 nights

Bologna to Siena – 5 nights

Does anyone have a suggestion for a departing airport that is close to Siena? I know we could return via FCO but we are open to using a smaller airport that is closer, even if it means spending an extra day somewhere else in Europe. Does this seem reasonable?

Are you driving or reliant on public transport?

While Pisa and Florence are closer to Siena, Pisa in particular is not that much quicker. By car, according to ViaMichen the journey to Rome airport is 40 minutes longer (but you will almost certainly have the advantage of a direct flight). Florence is only an hour/75 minutes from Siena, but is is a relatively small airport.

Trento the luxurious Grand Hotel has low rates, a great breakfast buffet. Make dinner reservation at The Antica Trattoria due Mori, one of our top five in Italy. Take a ride on the cable car; Bolzano day trip.

Florence, Pisa. We rented a villa near Siena for our family and our kids flew BOS to Zurich to Florence, and the other kids , US (JFK) to Pisa, flew back same ways..
These worked well for them.

Thank you all for the great suggestions!

We'll be using strictly public transportation on this trip. My primary objective is to find a nicer place then Fiumicino to spend an afternoon and evening before heading home. Not that it's terrible but we've been there, done that. Amsterdam seems viable. And I just now remember reading about Ostia Antica. I think I'll drill down on those two options.

Florence (FLR) is the closest airport. It offers several European flights to various European hubs, including, among others:
CDG (AirFrance)
AMS (KLM)
FRA or MUC (Lufthansa)
ZRH (Swiss)
AirFrance-KLM are Delta Partners. Lufthansa and Swiss are United Partners.
Pisa and Bologna are not too far either, but not much closer than Rome.
Florence and Pisa have no direct flights to North America, Bologna does but only to PHL (American).
Rome would have the most and cheaper options, including many direct to North America.

Five nights in Bologna, what a waste. We loved nearby Ravenna, but Bologna was just OK.

Do Siena on a day trip from Florence. Wait, you aren't even going to Florence!!!

Well, different strokes, I guess. We were floored by the mosaics in Ravenna but Bologna is a city we like and it's a great hub for visiting the area. Siena is also one of our favorites and we may take a day to see Florence again. Call us philistines.

Thanks for the input all the same.
