Siena Palio

I'm planning to be in Siena for the Palio on August 16, 2009 and sleeping in Florence that evening. I did try to get accommodations in Siena but it was impossible. The culminating event is the horse race, as any user of this site is likely to know. I just watched the July 2 palio on RAI and the race was delayed a full 70 minutes! While I realize its an unusually long delay, I'm concerned about getting back to Florence if a similar delay should occur on Aug. 16 as there are very few trains scheduled after 9PM. Does anyone know if additional trains are put in for the occasion, what the bus options/schedule would be on Palio day, and how much time to allow to get out of the Campo with the expected multitudes pressing flesh?
Grazie mille.

If you don't get many replies here,

go here and post the question

Answering this kind of question requires knowledge that only someone quite familiar with Siena and Florence, at the time of the Palio, is likely to have--such as a resident--and you're more likely to find such a person to answer your question at the link provided, since as far as I know we don't have any Florence or Siena residents answering questions here.
