We are renting a car in Venice and staying outside of Siena for a few days to discover the Tuscany area, and then on to Rome. Is it do-able to drive from Siena to Orvieto for a few hours or so, then on to Rome, drop off the car, and get to the Vatican for a night tour? Is that pushing it too much? We are a family of 5, with three teenage girls.
Originally I thought we might drop the car off in Orvieto and then take a train to Rome, as has been suggested on this Forum, but the train tickets have a cost, and we already have a car. How safe are the parking lots at Orvieto if we left our luggage for a few hours in the car? Alternatively, if my plan is too much, should we just drop the car off in Siena and then train into Rome and hit Orvieto on a different day? I want to take the Friday night tour at the Vatican, so this is my main goal. Thanks.
