Hi - we will be staying in Florence from Dec 20 until Dec 26. One of those days we would like to do a side trip and do NOT want to rent a car.
During this time frame, which city would you recommend: Siena or Montepulciano?
Thank you.

We’ve stayed in Siena twice and Montepulciano once, we like Montepulciano much better. It’s much more charming and has better views, in our opinion.
The trip to Siena by public transportation is much easier and faster than the trip to Montepulciano. Montepulciano is not a practical day trip from Florence without a car - add to that the in December it will be dark by 5pm.
Despite it's charm, I think Montepulciano is a bit too long a day trip from Florence especially in December. You would need to take a train to Chiusi and then a bus to Montepulciano, so travel time each way would be around 3 hours. You can reach Siena by direct bus from Florence in just over an hour.
Thank you all - although both locations sound wonderful - I think Siena may be a better option given the distance from Florence and light setting early in Dec.
