Siena or Florence as home base?

Our honeymoon will take us to Italy!! We will be spending 4 nights in either Florence or Sienna but are having difficulty deciding. We aren't renting a car. We know Florence is a train and bus hub but don't know about Sienna's accessibility to other towns for "day trips". Can we get to the hill towns such as San Gimignano, Volterra, and Montalcino easily from Sienna? Any help is greatly appreciated!

You can get to the hill towns from either place by public transportation. I find Siena more romantic than Florence, but it's hard to do Florence in a daytrip - you might need two!

Thank you for the quick response! Do you have any particular public transportation websites I can check to look at schedules, etc.?

Edward, For travel by train, the best source of information is the Trenitalia website. Be sure to use the Italian names when entering cities to search (ie: Firenze rather than Florence). For travel by Bus (which is the best method between Florence and Siena), use the SITA Bus website. The rail station in Siena is at the bottom of the hill, so it's necessary to use a Taxi or Bus to get up to the town. The Bus drops passengers right in the main part of town. You'll have to do some research using the above websites regarding transport to the three hill towns you mentioned. I can't recall whether train or Bus is the best method. Happy travels!

Generally, trains drop you at the foot of the city while buses take you into the center. Most train stations do have bus and taxi connections, it just depends on how many times you want to handle your luggage.

Both places are quite accessible, and are fine attractions on their own. The bus tours in Siena depart from Piazza Gramsci, which is pretty well in the middle of town. Their train station is outside the city walls and down a large hill. Florence's bus and train stations are in the same area (right across the street if I remember correctly). Either would be a superb location for a honeymoon!
