Siena Hotel Request

We have one night in Siena, and I am looking for the best experience. I like the look and feel of Pension Palazzo Ravizza to stay at, but was wondering what other similar options there are. We are driving in early, returning the car to Hertz and then taking the bus to Florence. Also, what is the best way to get our luggage to the hotel from the Hertz station. Thanks!

Consider Frances Lodge, a great B&B right above Siena. You can enjoy wine while you watch the sunset over Siena, and then walk right down into the town from the B&B ! You could park your car there and then return the car the next day when you head to the bus station.

It's not very far - you can see the town from their B&B.

I always stay at Albergo Bernini in Siena. Very close to a bus stop and centrally located.

This is not a reply as much as it's another question. We are set to have a car rental when we drive from Rome to Siena, but I know that the city is a car-restricted zone inside the walls. Would it be better to take the train from Rome and obtain our car rental after we check out of the hotel and depart for our further travels in Chianti and Tuscany? Our plan was to take the rental and park it outside the walled cities, which are mostly all we'll be encountering plus Portovenere near CT (we're traveling to Florence, Pisa, San Gimignana among others, ultimately by returning the rental to the Marco Polo airport before catching public transport to and from Venice).

The main question we're pondering concerns the logistics of parking outside the walls of these towns and then needing to walk from the parking location; or, is there public transportation convenient or taxis, etc? We have both read that taking the train between destinations is preferable, but we drove throughout our last trip, but it was back in 2001 and the car-restricted zones was virtually nonexistent in then. We love the flexibility of creating our own schedule rather than having to adjust to train/bus schedules and having to wait for the public transit/transport in queues. What's the best plan?

Susan,
Although we rented at FCO and drove to Tuscany, I think you might be better off taking the train. How long will you be in Siena? You could rent as you leave. There's no reason to pay for a car to just sit in a parking lot. There's a number of car rental places in Siena.

This past October we spent five nights at the Hotel Athena and reaaly liked the accommodation. The rooms were very clean, the staff was very friendly, and it was just an 8 minute walk to the Piazza del Campo. They have free parking behind the property, which was a nice feature.

We originally planned to take some day trips, but spent all of our time in Siena doing not much of anything.

Buon viaggio,
