Siena hotel

Will be in Siena in Sept for 4 nights, trying to decide between two Siena hotels. Narrowed it down to Hotel Athena or Palazzo Ravizza. We will have a car. We plan to do day trips. We want to be able to use the car for trips, but walk to restaurants each night. We are good walkers. Interested to hear good and/or bad about each.

I have actually stayed both places. Both have parking; the Athena sort of jams them in here or there on its small pad, so be sure you have arranged for parking when you book. They are roughly in the same area so the walk into the Campo is similar. The Athena is a bit closer to the gate in the town wall, so a bit further down the hill. The Palazzo is an old palazzo and the public rooms are lovely and old and our room had a ceiling with painted beams and windows with leaded panels kind of like stained glass but transparent. We had a view out over a countryside that was like a Renaissance painting. The dining area for breakfast was in a basement institutional sort of room and the foot rather institutional, but it was long enough ago that who knows now.

We rented a room in the Athena which was much cheaper one summer weekend when we were sweltering in an apartment in Florence. Our priority was AC for the weekend. We also asked for and got a high floor which had a stunning view over the countryside. It is a more modern high rise hotel without the charm of the Palazzo. We cranked the AC down to very cold and it delivered. Our room also had a deep lovely bathtub and the window shade was motorized so we could get it dark -- dark and cold was what we were looking for for a couple of nights.

The Athena has a lovely little terrace bar with great views; when we were there it was pretty much self service, we had to go inside and find the bar for drinks to take out. The Palazzo has nice gardens to enjoy the view and the countryside.

We liked both of these places and would book either again happily. Siena is a wonderful town and having a hotel with parking if you are driving is important.

was the parking situation at the Palazzo good?
