We will be in Siena for a day on May 26th which happens to be a Sunday. Duomo is open to the visitors only from 1:30pm- 5pm. Do I need to buy the tickets in advance? Are Sundays very crowded?
We can possibly plan the visit first thing on Monday morning too before we head to Florence but I would very much like to do it on Sunday itself.
Appreciate the help.
Shom,
We spent 4 days in Siena last year, and loved it. See the link below, for tickets to the Siena Cathedral Complex. It's not just the cathedral. I can't remember what day of the week we visited...it may have been a multi-day ticket. The Cathedral itself was busy, but the Baptistry was not.

Siena is lovely.
I went twice and both times the line to buy tickets was short, maybe 5 minutes. Both times there was a line to go into the cathedral but it was flowing so really no wait. The one place with a wait, maybe 20 minutes or so, was to go up the observation deck in the unfinished facade. The wait is definitely worth it for great views of Siena.
Technically May is shoulder season, but when we were in Siena in June or July, there was no way to get cathedral tickets unless you had a sort of whole-town ticket bought in advance. There was a long line opposite the cathedral for cancellations or something like that, but we could not spare an hour to wait in the sun. In this age of increased tourism I would assume there is a nasty line.
Note that there are only a few weeks a year that the cathedral floor is uncovered for viewing, but it sounds like you have no choice for your visit day.
