My husband and I are thinking of taking one of the days in Siena in October 2010 to do a day trip by bike. We're mostly interested in seeing the typical Tuscan countryside and have heard about the picturesque SS438 that connects Siena to Asciano. We're considering biking it but are wondering if it might be too dangerous considering the feisty Italian drivers. Can anyone advise us on this? Or if you have any back roads that might be safer but just as picturesque, please do share!
Hello Diane, I did some riding around the Tuscany region in 2007 and we'll be going again in Sept-Oct. I find most Italian drivers to be respectful of cyclists. That rider could be their neighbor or a cousin. However, its extremely important to ride defensively, avoid riding two abreast on blind curves, heavily trafficked roads demand attention and listen for fast cars, which are coming from behind, they may not anticipate seeing cyclists. Another thing to consider is that Italy is hilly, with some steep pulls. But at the end of climb, theres usually good food/beverages, gellato and encouragement. Have fun. Cordiali Saluti, David
Thanks so much for that. That's good to know that our biggest battle will probably be with hills and not Italian drivers! If you have any roads around Siena that you would recommend riding on, please do share as well :)
Hello Diane, I don't recall specific routes, as we participated in an organised cycling event. I would suggest simply googling "Tuscany bike routes" or something to that effect. Perhaps someone will chime in. Regards, David
