I am backpacking through and planning to stay in Orvieto 1 night and Siena for 2 or 3 nights. I will take the train from Rome to Orvieto, then Orvieto to Siena, then Siena to Florence at the end.
I would like to take 1 or 2 daytrips from Siena to the wineries - I was thinking Montalcino. Is this possible without a car? Can I walk between wineries in Montalcino?
Any suggestions for wineries would be appreciated as well.
Lauren, there are two ways to look at this. On the one hand, it seems like overkill to have you get a car for 1-2 days. But on the other hand a car is really the most efficient way to see Tuscany. It's the only way I have done it. Others have experience using the bus system and the trains. Take some time to dig through the discussion threads over the past month on the Helpline, and you should find enough information in there.
another idea would be to look into tour companies offering day trips to the wineries.
