Siena....alone....6 days

I'm in the process of planning my trip to Italy this year and although I've been to Italy several times, I haven't been to Siena nor have I seen the Chianti region. I was thinking of staying 6 days in Siena and doing day trips. Do you think that is too long to stay in Siena? Other suggestions?

I would break it up, with 3 days in Siena and 3 days in, say, Pienza.

I would divide time betw Siena and say Assisi. There is alot to do in Siena and around and can be done by public bus easily w/o transfers. Gen area around Assisi & Umbria is best done w/ car. My personal experience was Siena 3 nights, Cortona 2 nights,Orvieto 2 nights & Assisi 3 nights this incl daytrips out of ea.
It was terrific.

thank you for your replies. unfortunately, i won't have a car and will be traveling by bus/train so I will need to stay where there is easy access to both.

Angelina, I usually don't have a car and travel alone as well. I've been to Tuscany and Umbria many times and always love going back. (This year I've planned 3 days in Florence, 3 in Siena, 2 in Cortona, 3 in Assisi, with some day trips.) I would suggest spending some time in Siena (Tuscany) and some time in Umbria (I've used Assisi as a base). Travel in Umbria is a little slower than in Tuscany, but it's beautiful in a slightly more rugged way than Tuscany. Some interesting towns in the two areas are Spello, Todi, Arezzo, Pienza, if you haven't seen them before.

Six days is too long in Siena. Two is plenty, how about starting with 2 or 3 in Florence (walking is best there) then two in Siena, and two in one of the ones mentioned by others? The bus from Florence to Siena drops you in the medeival part of town, just a few blocks from som great B&Bs. We loved Albergo Bernini, as recommended by Rick. In Florence we were 6 blocks from the train/bus station, right across from the Baptistery on the Duomo piazza, fabulous. Have fun! Jan

I guess everyone is different. I'm in Siena right now, our second stay here in one year, and I'm sorry we'll leave tomorrow after four days. Siena in the evening is simply magical, and so safe. We rented a one bedroom apt here for 100 euros per night and travel is easy with the bus station just a 10 minute walk away. We did a day trip to Florence that cost only 7.80 euros each way and took 1.25 hours on the bus. Plenty of time for the Accademia, the Uffizi, and buying leather jackets! No matter how long you stay, I highly recommend gelato at Kopakabana and meals at Locanda Garibaldi. Both are excellent and inexpensive!

Celeste, Couldn't agree with you more! Siena is our favorite Italian city and we've traveled the entire country. We're spending a month in Siena later this year and can't wait! We're also huge Kobakabana gelato fans, too. (We were overjoyed when the second location opened.)
Angelina, we found day trips very easy from Siena. Bus, train or rental car, we've used them all with great results. Have a great time in Siena.

I'm with Celeste. Siena is magical. I would stay there the whole time and take day trips around the area.
I was there this time last year for 3 days and wish I had had longer.

Celeste, Linda and Karren........ Thank you so much for sharing your experiences and your opinion. After reading your posts, I have decided to stay in Siena for the entire 6 days and take day trips from there. Celeste, can you give me the name of the apartment you rented? If I could rent an apartment for 100 euro a that would be great. Also, I'm thinking after 6 days in Siena, I'd go to the shore and Elba seems about the closest Island. Have you ever been to Elba? Again, thank you for your post, it was very helpful.

I would stay in Siena for six MONTHS if I could. 6 days is great. I was there 4 days last year. Day trips around the area are easy by bus or train.

vrbo.com #320140. We paid 100 euro per night plus a 40 euro cleaning fee. Fantastic location and wonderful landlady who lives a couple of doors away (same building). I heartily recommend this apartment to everyone! Siena is so inexpensive compared to the big cities. Every morning we would walk about 50 yards to Nannini for our capuccino and pastries and it would be less than 6 euros for both of us!

I also recommend you eat at Locanda Garibaldi, a small local place off the Campo, and Trattoria La Torre down from the large tower (Torre di Mangia) in the Campo. Feel free to ask me any questions you may have!
