Siena

We are spending two nights in Siena this May. Arriving around 1:00 our first day , we have a tour scheduled the second day to San Gimignano and Chianti area. Wanting to see the cathedral in Siena , should we purchase the Opa Si Pass now or is that something we can purchase once we are in Siena? Also, the Gate of Heaven is an extra cost , has anyone done that? Thank you!!!!

You can purchase the Opa Si Pass in Siena. I have done both just a regular visit to the church using Rick's book, and then on a return trip last year with friends I booked the Gate of Heaven tour. Everyone loved it and I was glad we booked it. Took you to places you won't normally see and the inner workings up under the roof and the old tools they used to build it. You don't get a tour of the church with the Gate of Heaven so you'll still need to see the church itself. It's also not really a guided tour, there was 2 people who escorted us around the area and answered a few questions but not a true guide telling you about everything. They do hand out a nice pamphlet for you to read. I'd recommend the gate of heaven.

Note that the Gates of Paradise on the Baptistery are now located in the Museo dell' Opere del Duomo; the doors on the Baptistery are copies (very good ones, but...).

Robert,
I am also going to be in Siena this May. Would I be able to purchase the Gate of Heaven tour while I'm in the city or is it something to be scheduled ahead of time? Also do you have any tours you recommend just for Siena itself. We have a car to explore other hill town so I don't need a tour to bring us out into the countryside but would like
