I'm planning a 7 day trip to Rome in August of this year. Do buses/trains run to Pompeii and Naples? Any other ideas for side trips using only buses/trains for transportation?

You can easily take the train to Naples and then on to Pompeii. Other great day trips would be to Ostia Antica, Tivoli, and Florence. The transportation system in Italy is great and you can get to most places without the use of a car. Use the trenitalia site for schedules and prices. Donna

The best money you could spend on your trip would be to buy a copy of the RS Rome 2011 book. It lays out all the details for several daytrips from Rome, including Naples/Pompeii, not to mention the answers to questions you won't even know you need to ask.
