Side trips outside of Rome toward the South? Not far from airport.

Hi,
We're devoting time to Rome, North into Tuscany area, but would also like to hear about other side trips, maybe South of Rome? Any ideas? Thanks so much for ideas.

How much time do you have? What are your interests?

Hi Zoe,
Thanks for responding. We are driving south from Pienza on morning of 19th . We leave Italy the next day (20th), so we are interested in spending the 19th seeing a bit more of Rome or the area on the South side. So to answer your question , we don't have lots of time. We thought about just staying in Rome that day, maybe visiting the Vatican museums, and Sistine Chapel. I have been looking at reservations and there seem to be many choices. Other than that, I am curious about any add. sites just south of the Rome city center. Thanks.

You could stay near the Vatican area and take the train to the airport the next day. There is a station very close to St. Peter's. You can book entry tickets or a tour of the museums through the official site. Both will allow you to bypass the long ticket lines. You might have time in the afternoon to visit the rest of the city and wander the streets.

I would spend that day in Roma, or perhaps go to one of the Castelli Romani for the day (Frascati, Tivoli, Castel Gandolfo).
