We will be staying in Rome for 4 day and are considering doing a side trip on one of the days. I have heard about Lake Bracciano and was considering it as an option. Has anyone been, any recommendations on what areas of the Lake to visit? Or should we plan on going to a coastal town instead?
Heather, One very easy day trip from Rome is a trip to Orvieto (about an hour by train each way). It's a beautiful Umbrian hill town with an interesting history. While there you could tour the incredible Duomo with the Signorelli frescoes, St. Patrick's Well (a remarkable engineering achievement in it's time) or take the Underground tour. Happy travels!
The very excellent Ron in Rome covers this topic very well here: http://www.roninrome.com/sites-attractions/outside-rome
They're right about Orvieto. Great hill town. Good place to spend the night. 70 minutes from Termini.
Another vote for Orvieto. It's a great town! If you're wanting to see ruins, you might also consider Ostia Antica...but personally I'd opt for Orvieto. Be sure to take the underground tour if you go to Orvieto. It's only an hour long & very informative. Have a great trip.
Perfect! Thanks for the tips, we live ruins and wanted to see a few hill towns so that sounds like a great option.
