We're going to be in Bolzano next week and the snow for skiing looks to be pretty bad. Looking for some good winter friendly side trips from there (2 hours or less by car)? Train is also a possibility.
Easy trips by train are Merano and Bressanone. Actually Bressanone/Brixen, being the original bishop-prince seat, was for centuries the capital of united Tyrol so the Cathedral and Bishop palace are more interesting than architectures in Bolzano.
Innsbruck is 1 hour 15 minutes by car, more by train (often with a change at Brenner pass) but is quite interesting as it was an imperial seat in 16th century. The Hofburg there is a small copy of the Hofburg in Vienna.
(Note: if going to Innsbruck by car, you have to pay the Italian and the Austrian highway, but as long as you exit at Innsbruck Süd, not going further, the Austrian highway vignette is not necessary).
Mountaineering icon Reinhold Messner has a museum spread over six locations not far from Bolzano.
