Side trip from Rome?

Wife and I arrive Rome Sunday October 27 and depart Monday November 4. Any suggestions for a 2-night side trip? Naples/Pompeii is one consideration, curious as to others. Thank you.

Orvieto? If this is your first trip to Rome, don’t leave the city for an excursion.

Naples/Pompeii would be a great 2-night trip! Another consideration: It's a 2-hour train trip each way to Assisi and there's a 7:58 am direct train there from Roma Termini station. What do you all enjoy, want to see and do? Another great city and the excavations at Pompeii? A Tuscan or Umbrian hill town? Art? Scenery? Food? History?

Alot to choose from! A few questions:

  • As asked, first trip to Rome? If so, I would think of staying in Rome the entire time, and maybe a day trip or 2 out. I will be in Rome early October, 9th visit, and just feeling like I am scratching the surface of the city - so much to do and see.
  • Have you booked hotels in Rome? I ask, as a 2 day side trip would mean packing and moving, then coming back to Rome.. unless the 2 day side trip is at the end?
  • Florence is 1 hour 45 min train ride.. an option
    • As stated, Orvieto, 1 hour train ride, and easy to get to, and lovely (either as day trip, or stay).
    • Ostia antica is an awesome day trip.

Not knowing your preferences, along with Orvieto, Tivoli, Hadrian Villa and Villa d'Este.
3 hours away by train/bus combo, the amazing hill town of Montepulciano.

Thank you all. To clarify your excellent inquiries, yes and no on first trip to Rome-- my second, my wife's first. However when I was last there I think Diocletian was still Emperor. We have been to Florence, Milan, Lucca, San Gimingnano, Cinque terre and Venice previously. Agreed that a week in Rome could keep us busy and content-- in fact, perhaps this, with day trips some of you were kind enough to specify (Orvieto-- nice wines!), will now likely help shape our planning. Molto grazie!

hey hey darylrc
is this your first trip to rome? if so i would spend those days there, so much to see and do without seeing it all.
if the 2 night side trip while in rome or after? another area is castel gandolfo, the summer palace and gardens of the popes. maybe 30 to 40 minute train ride to countryside from rome. lake nemi and lake alban are located there, rent a hotel room overlooking lake, tour the frascati vineyards and villages, known for white wine.
"beautiful countryside day trip: castelli romani. a tourguide takes you thru the area (withlocals.com)
oldfrascati.com read up about us, tours, blog
italymagazine.com (search lake nemi and wild berry) village of nemi is well know for it's wild strawberries grown there and making whatever you can think of with them.
italyheaven.com (search castelli romani) and read up about the area
ceralli.it family owned bakery/pizza oven is small village of frascati. nonna is 90 years old and still bakes, her son in charge of oven and "best" porchetta in town. saw a food special about this place.
just another option you can check out.
enjoy have a fabulous time.

Here's another vote for a couple of nights in Orvieto. It's just a few kilometers from being in Tuscany and is really, really charming (not to mention super easy to get to from Rome).
