Sicily walking/hiking tour

Hello:
We are looking at a 7 day walking/hiking tour in Sicily. in October 2019. We have to pick between the East coast of Sicily or the West coast of Sicily. Can anyone make any suggestions. We are going to supplement this week long walking trip with another week on the other side on our own. We will be doing the first week totally by trains as my husband does not want to drive. We will then meet up with the tour group for the second week which will be primarily walking/sightseeing. WE only have two weeks so will have to do as much as we can in this time.
THank you.

I would add more about the two routes to compare, and what you would do if each was chosen. The way I would decide is by comparing 1) whether either tour took me to places I could not reasonably get to independently and 2) whether either independent itinerary was more convenient than the other. That might require some public transport legwork, but I bet if you add details here, someone is sure to have some tips!

My reaction was the same as valadelphia's.

In 2015 I spent 18 days in Sicily, using only trains and buses for transportation, and it's my impression that it's easier to get around the east coast and near-inland areas without a car than to be carless in the west. However, there is certainly bus service from Palermo to Trapani, and from there you have the bus and funicular options for Erice. I did not go anywhere else in the west, so I may be painting too pessimistic a picture of
public transportation there.

Hi Janet

This is a truly Sicilian replying.

Unfortunately, public transports are not great in my lovely island and so it is traffic (driving is crazy and drivers do not follow rules, especially in big cities like Palermo).

My only suggestion is to allow extra time in the case trains are late or do not show up at all.
