Sicily vs Greece for Greek ruins

We are traveling to Sicily & are considering Greece as an add on. Our questions is, if we see most of the architectural ancient sites in Sicily, it is worth doing a road trip in Greece to see those sites too ? We would do a few days in Athens, then do island tours. Any thoughts? thank you

Re: Greece. What do you mean by island tours? The island that is 100% antiquities is Delos which is easiest to teach from Mykonos by boat. You don’t need a tour; a good guide book such as Michelin Green Guide will suffice.

Not been to Greece. But noting, as we were told several times in Sicily, there are more well-preserved Greek ruins to visit there than in Greece.

and there are great ones in Paestum! But that's far from Sicily....but closer than Greece :)

After seeing the temples at Agrigento and a couple at Selinunte, we had had enough of temples. After enough of them, a temple is a temple, is a temple. The same goes for cathedrals, monasteries, castles, and any number of other things.

Still, Athens has the amazing Parthenon, which is hard to beat. Also, love the New Acropolis Museum.
I haven't been to Sicily and don't plan to do so, I do love Italy north of the Naples area.

The Greek Islands are best discovered on a cruise.

OMG! You have to go to Greece. I'm Greek and I have to say that I have been to Sicily as well. I love all archeological sites. First, go to Athens. Stay near the Parthenon and definitely visit the new Acropolis Museum. You can take a virtual tour online. Next, you can take a day trip to Delphi. See the movie My Life in Ruins to get an idea of the area. Take a flight to Santorini and explore the island. From Santorini, take a speed boat-ferry to Crete. The palace of Knossos and the beaches in Crete are beautiful. Renting a car is easy from your hotel. Driving is so easy on the island.
Best of Luck!!

How much time do you have for this trip? Unless you have a month or more, I think adding on Greece would be shortchanging both countries.

There’s a lot besides archeological sights in Sicily. Some of our favorite places were little towns like Scopello, where you can hike through the Zingaro nature reserve. And the island of Lipari, where you can day trip to the volcanic island of Stromboli.

Once you’ve fully explored Sicily, you can start planning Greece for a future trip.

I'm not a lover on ancient ruins, but I think for the typical tourist (as opposed to an expert in the field), the Sicilian and Greek ruins would have more impact if not all seen on the same trip. I'd rather not travel as far and focus on variety of sights. Sicily alone needs at least two weeks if you'll have a car available for part of the time--and you'll be making hard choices.

So, if you have unlimited time, the answer is yes. If not, make and enjoy two trips. We loved Sicily, and Agrigento at sunset/evening was the highlight of our wonderful trip. In Greece, we went to Delphi, Meteora, Sifnos, Milos and then Athens. Sifnos, Meteora and the Parthenon were the highlights (though the Parthenon was crazy crowded). Happy planning!

How much time do you have?
Anything less than 10-12 days in Sicily would make it very hard to see even the bare minimum the island has to offer.
Regarding the ruins, I've been to both, and both are interesting. Obviously if you love Ancient Greece visiting Athens is a must, however there are major major Greek archeological sites in Sicily, like Segesta, Selinunte, Syracuse, so you have plenty of opportunities for going Greek in Sicily.
