To hire a private guide is so expensive and we are not a fan of group tours. Will we be ok with just the audio guide?

I suggest you go to the museum first as it will give you a better idea of what you are looking at when you get to the largest ruin, The Temple of Zeus.

Audio guide is more than enough. We didn't even have that. You can research the temples ahead of time and print it out, and you don’t need the audio. Your choice. We spent 3 hours at the temples last September and felt that was sufficient. We skipped the museum, and did the gardens separately.
