How to travel from Venice to Palermo for Sicily tour and then returning from Catania to FCO. Anyone heard of Volotea airlines? Is it safe?

Volotea is okay, I would definitely fly from Venezia to Palermo and from Catania to Roma.

I have heard of Volotea, am not too familiar but have heard that they are fine. I'm sure they are safe, my concern would be with baggage rules and fees, so look at that.

Fly from Venice to Palermo and Catania to Rome. I flew Rome to Catania on easyjet which was fine and cheap. This is a situation where you want to book two one-ways (one VCE to PMO and one CTA to FCO) because the same airline might not service, or have good fares, on both routes. Budget airlines will be fine here - these are short flights so things like meal service or entertainment won't really come into play. But do look at baggage fees and things to make sure the low rate you see is accurate.

And if you fly to or from Venice, be sure the flight you choose uses the Venice airport, not the Treviso airport (unless you also want to see Treviso).

I flew on Volotea in 2014, Palermo to Naples. One-hour flight, everything smooth, no problems. Be sure you understand baggage rules. Given restrictions, I assumed that I would have to check my carry-on and just carry a tote bag on to the plane. It was quite cheap to pay for a checked bag when buying your ticket, considerably more later on. If you have any flexibility as to date of travel, on some dates Volotea tends to offer downrate super-cheap fares, but only on certain indicated dates.

Are you staying in Italy after Sicily or flying out from FCO? If you are connecting at FCO, it's better to get tickets from Catania to your destination. Catania's airport can be closed any time nearby Etna spews ash and creates visibility problems. If you're on a separate ticket to FCO and miss your onward flight, you have no recourse.

Has anyone flown from Treviso in Venice to Palermo? If so, how did you get to Treviso from your hotel in Venice?

I've never been to Treviso, but Rome2Rio.com indicates that there are buses from Venice Tronchetto to Treviso. You should be able to find the schedule on the website terravision.eu .

You can also take the train to Treviso and a bus on from there. If you drill down on Rome2Rio.com, you'll reach links to the appropriate bus companies.
