What are some recommendations for travel guides to Sicily? I've been to mainland Italy twice, but never to Sicily. Your suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks.
bestofsicily.com is a great site. I would always just print out pages from there and then toss them as I went.
Thanks, Ron. I have looked at that site and it does look very helpful.
The Blue Vuide to Sicily will give you lots of information, especially if you are interested in art and history. I think Michelin also has a guide for Sicily. Best of Sicily website is terrific.
I am taking my second trip to Sicily. My first trip was two years ago, and I had a lucky accident in stumbling across Magicofsicily.com It is run by two local very nice fellows who offer both apartment rentals and tours. It was the trip of a lifetime! It is based out of Taormina, and we used this as our base in a beautiful apartment overlooking the Med for less than half the price of a hotel. We saw pretty much all of Sicily's East Coast, and enjoyed eating our own breakfast on the outdoor terrace. We had no need for a car, as they pick you up at Catania airport, and we enjoyed the town of Taormina, and took advantage of several day trips, including to Mt. Etna, Gambino Vineyard for a wine tasting, and several others, including a family owned farm for a lovely outdoor lunch. We were two couples in our late 50's who are all very well travelled. I've been to Italy many times, having family in the North, but this was our dream to go to Sicily. We all absolutely adored these two men, and they've added tours I'm going back again, but also going to explore the entire North and West Coast also.
We enjoy "slow travel" using an apartment as a base. It beats packing up and getting in a car or train or bus every two days but that's us. Almost forgot! There is a funicular in Taormina that takes you down to the sea which is beautiful for walking and swimming if you like cold water but also for a meal with a view. This time after arrival in Palermo will probably use a car, but we didn't need one for that trip. Have fun!! Sicily, it's people, food and culture are beautiful! P.S. they speak perfect English at Magicofsicily
Thanks for the feedback! I'll check out those sites.
I prefer guidebooks to websites, and have used Lonely Planet, Rough Guide and Cadogan Sicily books.
